Ultimate Mildura Weekend Getaway: Two-Day Itinerary
The Sunraysia region is a landscape of beautiful contrasts. Here, the deep blue of the Murray River slices through the ancient red sand country of the Victorian Mallee, bordered by majestic forests of river red gums and black box trees. If you are looking to escape the city grind and reconnect with nature, a mildura weekend getaway offers the perfect balance of tranquil river time and rugged outback exploration. Whether you are a couple seeking quiet sunsets over the water or a family looking to keep active kids engaged in the fresh air, two days in this region will leave you thoroughly refreshed.
At Wildside Outdoors, we have been helping visitors experience the best of this unique environment for more than 25 years. Originally founded by Allan Hassell and Ian Smith, and led today by Thomas Floyd, our deep connection to the river and the Mallee ensures you get genuine local insights. Planning Your Sunraysia Adventure
Before you pack the car, it helps to understand the local seasons. Autumn and spring are the undisputed prime times to visit the Sunraysia. During these months, daytime temperatures hover comfortably in the mid-twenties, and the winds are generally light. Winter brings crisp, clear days with cold nights, which is perfect for active hiking and biking, though you will want plenty of layers. Summer can be incredibly hot, with temperatures frequently climbing past 40 degrees Celsius. If you visit in summer, plan your outdoor activities for the early morning or late evening, and spend the middle of the day resting in the shade or swimming in safe, still waters.
Always carry more water than you think you need, especially when heading into the Mallee parks. Sun protection, broad-brimmed hats, insect repellent, and sturdy enclosed footwear are essential year-round. If you are hitting the water, remember that the Murray River is a powerful, flowing natural system. Always wear a properly fitted personal flotation device, keep a respectful distance from snags and fallen timber, and stay aware of other vessels.
Day One: River Red Gums and Moving Water
Morning: Paddling the Historic Murray
Start your first morning by getting right out onto the water. The best way to experience the river is from a low, quiet vantage point. Slipping into a kayak or canoe allows you to feel the gentle pull of the current and hear the calls of the forest. For couples, a double kayak offers a coordinated, peaceful way to glide past towering clay cliffs and watch whistling kites soar overhead. Families will love the stability of multi-seat canoes, which have plenty of room for kids and a dry bag packed with lunch.
We recommend launching from a quiet bend just out of town, where the current is gentle and the banks are lined with ancient river red gums. You can easily arrange kayak, canoe and mountain bike hire with our team to have all the gear ready for your start. Keep your eyes peeled for local wildlife. You might spot lace monitors basking on fallen logs, azure kingfishers darting along the clay banks, or even a platypus if you are quiet in the early morning light.
Afternoon: Exploring the River Trails on Two Wheels
After a relaxed picnic lunch by the water, it is time to swap your paddles for pedals. The dirt tracks winding through the river reserves and nearby state forests are ideal for mountain biking. These trails are mostly flat, making them highly accessible for families with younger riders, but they offer enough twists, turns, and sandy patches to keep experienced riders entertained.
Ride beneath the canopy of black box trees, smelling the dry, earthy scent of the Australian bush. There are several excellent loops that lead to scenic lookouts over the river bends. Keep an eye out for mobs of western grey kangaroos feeding in the shaded clearings as the afternoon cools down. Ensure you bring a basic trail map, a pump, and a puncture repair kit, as three-corner jacks (doublegees) can occasionally be found on the dirt tracks.
Day Two of Your Mildura Weekend Getaway: Lake and Forest Trails
Morning: The Tranquil Waters of Lake Cullulleraine
On your second day, head slightly west of Mildura to the beautiful oasis of Lake Cullulleraine. This freshwater lake is a stark contrast to the moving river, offering calm, glassy waters that are incredibly safe and welcoming for swimmers, stand-up paddleboarders, and young families. It is a peaceful place to spend a morning slow-paddling or walking the shoreline.
Spend your morning completing the scenic walking and cycling track that loops around the lake. The trail is approximately 9 kilometres long, flat, and well-graded, making it a comfortable walk for couples or an easy ride for kids. The lake is a haven for waterbirds. You will easily spot black swans, pelicans, and elegant spoonbills wading in the shallows. If you want to base your stay here or plan a longer trip, our Lake Cullulleraine camp offers a fantastic, relaxed environment right on the water's edge.
Afternoon: Adventure Activities or National Park Wonders
For the final afternoon of your getaway, you can choose your own level of adventure. If you have a family group or a couple of families travelling together, you might want to book one of our structured adventure activity sessions. These can include guided archery, raft building, or navigation challenges designed to build confidence and have fun in the outdoors under the supervision of qualified guides.
Alternatively, if you want to experience the deeper, wilder side of the Mallee, take a drive south towards the Hattah-Kulkyne National Park. This park is famous for its extensive lake systems, rolling sand dunes, and abundant birdlife. Walking among the massive red gums of the Hattah lakes when they hold water is an unforgettable experience. For those with more time on a future trip, we also run fully supported expeditions that allow you to fully immerse yourself in this spectacular, remote landscape.
